How to measure your room

Are you planning to revamp your living space or start an interior design project? One of the crucial steps in the process is measuring the room accurately. Whether you're planning to rearrange furniture, choose new decor, or work with an interior designer, having accurate measurements of your room is essential for a successful project. In this post, we'll provide you with a step-by-step guide on how to measure a room.

Step 1: Gather Your Tools Before you start measuring. You'll need a measuring tape, a pencil or pen, a notepad or a sketchbook, and a calculator. It's essential to use a metric tape measure for precise measurements in metric scale.

Reminder: when using a measuring tape, note that some have 2 sides. There is imperial, which reads inches (in./ “)and feet (Ft. / ‘), and there is metric which reads centimeters (cm)and meters (m) in this guide will be using metric. In the philippines and many parts of europe, and australia use this is as the standard in MEASURING.

Step 2: Clear the Room Make sure the room you're measuring is cleared of any obstacles, such as furniture, decor, or clutter. You want a clear and unobstructed view of the walls, floor, and ceiling to measure accurately.

Step 3: Measure the Walls Start by measuring the walls of the room. Measure the length of each wall from one corner to the other, making sure to include any doors, windows, or other openings. Note down the measurements in your notepad or sketchbook, labeling each wall for reference. Measure the walls in meters or centimeters, depending on your preference.

Step 4: Measure the Floor Next, measure the floor of the room. Measure the length and width of the room from one corner to the other, excluding any baseboards or moldings. Record the measurements in meters or centimeters in your notepad or sketchbook.

Step 5: Measure the Ceiling If you're planning to work on the ceiling as part of your interior design project, measure the height of the ceiling from the floor. Measure from the floor to the highest point of the ceiling, recording the measurement in meters (m) or centimeters (cm)

Step 6: Measure the Windows and Doors To ensure that your furniture or decor fits well in the room, measure the windows and doors. Measure the height, width, and depth of each window and door, noting down the measurements in your notepad or sketchbook. Measure in meters or centimeters for accuracy. Get the height of the window sill.

Step 7: Measure Other Elements If there are other elements in the room that you want to consider in your interior design project, such as built-in shelves, alcoves, measure them as well. Measure the height, width, and depth of these elements, recording the measurements in meters or centimeters.Get a photo from the center of each wall and from each corner of the room. Eight photos total!

Try to get outlets, vents wired lighting in your photos. If not, please make a note of them on your drawing.

Step 8: Check and Double-Check After you've completed all the measurements, review them to ensure accuracy. Double-check your measurements and calculations to avoid any mistakes that could impact your interior design project.

Step 9: Create a Floor Plan With all the measurements in hand, you can now create a floor plan. Use a graph paper or a computer-aided design (CAD) software to draw a scaled floor plan of the room.

Step 10: Share with Your Interior Designer If you're working with an interior designer, share your measurements and floor plan with them. This will help them better understand the space and create a design plan that fits your room's dimensions perfectly.
